Dr. Matthias C. Eberspächer-Schweda

Profile

A specialist in a discipline long underestimated in veterinary medicine.

Sixteen years at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, thirteen of them as head of the dental service – and involved in building the Small Animal Clinic and its dental department. Those years shaped the way I work: clinically demanding cases, three-dimensional imaging as standard, and the training of young colleagues as a fixed part of everyday practice.

I am a Diplomate of both the American and the European Veterinary Dental College – Board Certified Veterinary Dentist® and EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Dentistry – as well as an Austrian Fachtierarzt for Small Animal Dentistry and for Small Animal Medicine, and holder of the ÖTK Diploma in Dental and Oral Surgery.

My work rests on three pillars that depend on one another: the clinic, where the cases arise; research, which answers the open questions they raise; and teaching, which passes both on.

Clinic

Dentistry and oral surgery in dogs, cats and rabbits.

My clinical focus is on dogs, cats and rabbits: endodontics, periodontal surgery, temporomandibular joint disorders, oncologic oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the diagnosis and treatment of acquired dental disease in small mammals with elodont dentition. Three-dimensional imaging with CBCT has become an indispensable part of my daily work.

This is complemented by laser surgery of the oral cavity and radiation protection – at the university I served as radiation protection officer and completed laser safety training.

Focus areas

Oral and maxillofacial trauma and tumour surgery · maxillofacial reconstruction · endodontics · periodontal surgery · orthodontics · temporomandibular joint · small mammal dentistry

Diagnostics

Dental radiography · cone-beam CT · computed tomography · micro-CT · standardised reporting and documentation

Research

Questions that arise in the operating room – and are answered in the lab.

My research follows the clinic: it starts with problems encountered in patients and works on solutions using high-resolution imaging and additive manufacturing. Projects are carried out in collaboration with the Medical University of Vienna, VetCore and the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

Patient-specific titanium implants

Design, optimisation and biomechanical evaluation of 3D-printed bridging plates for critical-size defects of the canine mandible – using generative design and fatigue testing. Doctoral thesis of Mag. Doris Baumgartner, together with the Medical University of Vienna.

Micro-CT anatomy of the canine tooth

Three-dimensional morphology of the canine tooth in dogs, in particular the apical delta, using micro-computed tomography. In collaboration with VetCore and the Institute of Anatomy.

CBCT in maxillofacial fractures

Diagnostic benefit of cone-beam computed tomography in maxillofacial fractures following high-rise syndrome in cats. Doctoral thesis of Mag. Felix Wolf.

Endodontic instrumentation

Comparison of different endodontic instrumentation techniques in veterinary medicine using high-resolution imaging of canine teeth in dogs. Doctoral thesis of Mag. Johanna Wunderl.

Rabbit intubation model

3D-printed smart intubation model and associated technique – FWF project P 35354-B, together with the Anaesthesiology unit of Vetmeduni Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna.

SVAN – Safe Vascular Access Needle

Spin-off Fellowship 2022–2027 together with the Medical University of Vienna.

Teaching

Teaching since 2009 – in the lecture hall, in the wet lab and at congresses.

Knowledge that stays in the operating room helps few patients. Knowledge that is passed on helps many. That is why teaching is not a by-product of my work but a part of it in its own right – from core curriculum lectures and multi-day workshops to the supervision of theses.

Lecture and course topics
